Web Technology - an introduction Are you responsible for providing a web site? If you are, and the site is a straightforward one, you can simply rent a little space on a computer that's permanently attached to the Internet, and upload your web page content to that computer. Your Web Space Service Provider (WSP) will arrange for you to have a unique Domain Name (our unique domain name here is www.phpcourse.co.uk and our main site is at www.wellho.net) and a way to log in to change the content of the pages, and you'll be away. But these days, most web site owners want them to offer the visitor rather more than plain, linked pages. And so there's a requirement to run programs that run on the web site computer - perhaps calculating a body mass index, perhaps providing an online quotation for a service - or perhaps using the web site to connect to a database, and allow the user to search out information and have it presented in a way that he / she wishes. These web site programs can be written in any one of a number of languages; perhaps the most common are Java, Perl, Visual Basic (VB) and PHP. There are already many such programs written, with names from Moodle to Zope and from Moveable Type to PHPbb, via SMF and Plone and a host of others. Many of them are what is know as "Open Source" whihc means that you pay no license fee at the point of dirstibution, which gives you a low cost startup. However, you should not underestimate the time it will take you to install and tailor software, and (usually a far bigger job!) the time it will take you to enter the information that your web site is to provide. If you'll be writing your own web programs using PHP, Perl or Java, or if you'll be installing and "tweaking" programs that someone else has written, you'll need to know a little about the programming language. At Well House Consultants, we offer courses in each of them (and in the basic technoology of web pages too) at our training centre in Melksham, Wiltshire, England. There's a course diary here (and, yes, we use PHP to update that diary, with completed causes automatically disappearing ...). Please do get on touch (email Lisa or Graham if you would like to talk through your own requirements. Taking a further step, you may decide that your requirment is such that yoiu need to run your own web server computer - either hosted by a specialist company who ensure that such machines run 24 hours a day, or even hosted at your own office. Once you're involved with these issues, you need to learn the operating system - commonly Linux from the viewpoint of day to day use and also the administration aspects. There's further work involved in configuring the apache httpd web server and - if your web site uses Java - apache http and Tomcat too. | ||
